Velocity does not seem to respond to terrain

Post by cwanstreet » Wed Nov 11, 2009 8:32 pm

I am using 4-wheeler extended and attempting to simulate a vehichle over a washboard type surface with occasional large lumps however, try as I might the vehichle moves at a constant velocity while traveling over the terrain. Looks more like a tank than a car. I am attempting to use autonomous mode and have tried adjusting my follow strenght or sphere radius all to little effect with regard to the speed with which the vehichle moves over bumps. Are there any pearls of wisdom you can offer, or am I perhaps missing something which would help lead me to a more realistic simulation? Thanks for your help.

Hi Chad,

Craft 4-Wheeler Extended doesn't have a gravity setting (yet). But Craft Spline Speed-Controller does, so what you can do if you want it to slow down when going up a slope and speed up when going down hill is to utilize Craft Spline Speed-Controller. Make it follow the spline that I assume you already have, and set Craft 4-Wheeler Extended's target mesh to follow Craft Spline Speed-Controller's carrige.

Carl,

Thanks for the responce! Using the Spline speed controller it seems that my spline must match the terrain with regard to topology in order for the gravity to take effect. Is this indeed the case? In the 4wheeler I like that your terrain and path do not need to be related with respect to topology for the car to respond to changes in terrain. If you had an animated surface it would be a lot more work to make the car respond approprately that way. When do you forsee adding gravity to the 4wheeler extended, out of curiousity?

Thanks for the help.

Ah, this is true. I thought your spline followed the landscape already but if this is not the case then the Craft Spline Speed-Controller "workaround" means a bit more work than I originally thought.

When do you foresee adding gravity to the 4wheeler extended, out of curiousity?
It's a great feature, so I would love to see it realized. I don't know how difficult it is to implement though, maybe Luigi can answer that.

Hi.
Not difficult at all, but there are sooo many things being devloped right now that it is difficult to it squeeze right now. It has been on the the todo-list for quite a while, but perhaps we can prioritize it since quite a few customers have asked for this feature. We will discuss this.

I'm going to throw my own hat into the ring as well in support of the gravity/jumping feature. You have no idea how happy you'll make me when they're added.
