craft animation and image planes

Hey, I'm having difficulties animating the 4wheeler craft car against an image plane. Each time I want to move the car along the road I have in my image plane, the car jumps up and only wants to move along the grid and not parallel with the image. Is there anyway round this? Has anyone any experience of using craft and image plane combination? Cheers
